Throughout this semester I have learned many new things relating to the digital world and have attained new skills. What made an impact on me and what I would consider taught me the most about the digital world is the following three topics. 1.) Throughout this semester we had major projects where we were instructed to use a new digital tool to aid us to express our creativity or discuss a topic that is relative to today. For example, the class had to research a specific topic and then make an audio recording discussing that said topic. I have never used an audio recording before as a tool for academics, so at first I was nervous I would not do well, but after help from my professor and the DKC and researching how to utilize the tool I feel well versed now, and I could now say I learned a new skill and I am going to use that skill in the future for any class or job-related work or even personal projects. 2.) There were two individual and group work that we had to complete. First, we had to watch “The Social Dilemma”. That video opened my eyes to how much social media controls people’s perception of information and the world. Not only does it control our perception on multiple aspects of our lives it controls and affects our identity and how much we have an identity on any platform and who and what we interact with. Then we did a group project researching the effects technology has on the environment. It was really surprising to hear about the horrible effects that have been put on the environment. For example, the chapter I read was about “Black Lakes and White Latex” which are the negative effects of ore processing. Not only did it affect the environment it affected the people in the community and their ability to have jobs. These two projects just really put a new perspective in mind of how the digital community can affect every aspect of the world whether it’s people or the environment. 3.) The last project would be the personal website that we were assigned to create. This has challenged me in many ways because before this class I was not very technologically versed. When creating this website I have learned new ways to express my creativity digitally and learned how to utilize new tools. I did not have any idea what went into creating a website so it was cool to be the one creating it instead the actual user of the website. Now I can use this website to express who I am and potentially help me professionally in the future or just have this as a way to show my favorite moments in my life. This class has helped me learn so much and become more confident in all aspects of digital technology and I learned so much about it that I would have not known originally.
