Should AI-generated works be considered art, why or why not? If so, who deserves the credit?
I think that when you ask people if AI-generated works should be considered art you will receive many different opinions. There really is not a simple answer because there are many aspects that you have to take into consideration when solidifying your opinion. I would say that it is complicated. AI-generated works are a new innovation for the art community that wasn’t once there and can help bring in a new demographic. It has the ability to create very visually amazing works and can be used by other artists as a tool to help bring to life and jumpstart their ideas. AI also brings a new digital aspect to art compared to the traditional ideas of art like painting, drawing, sculpture, etc. There are many pros to AI-generated works but I do think that there are many negatives to this. AI is known to take many ideas from artists and use them to create something new and not give them the credit they deserve. Taking artist’ ideas and identities from them can really have an effect on them professionally when trying to gain credibility and have their art known publicly. AI can create something so quickly that I feel like it takes away the traditional human aspect relating to technical skills and talents that artists work on for years, and now all of a sudden you can have something created at the drop of a hat without any effort or skill really put into it. The art community as a whole is always evolving and changing and I think overall that this is a complex topic at the end of the day, it really depends on what you define art as and if you think it is beneficial or not. I asked AI this exact question and they responded with, “AI-generated works should be considered art depending on one’s definition of art and the value placed on human intentionality and originality. The credit for such works is likely best seen as a collaborative effort between human creators and the AI tools they use”.
